New Student - Items To Pack For Your Trip To Sydney As A New Student
by Sally L. Watkins Friday December 16th 2022
Congrats! You finally gained admission to one of the top universities in Sydney. You have likely sorted out your visa. Haven't you?
The chances are even that you have rounded up your travel plan. Or wait, don't you know what to pack?
We have been there; packing as a new student headed overseas can be hectic. And when your destination is Sydney (a city known for its cultural diversity and fun), the task can even become harder to navigate.
But don't fret; life is simple in Sydney. You don't have to be EXTRA prepared to fit in with your peers. Besides your "everyday" kit, you only need a few things to enjoy your time here.
Here are a list of Items To Pack For Your Trip To Sydney As A New Student
1. Jet Lag Remedy
Regardless of where you're from, your flight to Sydney (Australia generally) can run into hours. Unless you already live in Australia, you can spend up to (or over) 20hours coming here.
As a result, you might experience a minor sleep disorder from travelling that long and crossing multiple time zones. If you would like to reduce the experience altogether, get a jet lag remedy for your journey.
With melatonin, for example, you can limit your jet lag and sleep when you typically won't. Overall, this remedy will smoothen your travel and transition into life in Sydney.
However, if you have a history of complications with jet lag remedies, check with your doctor to find the safest option.
2. Sunscreen
Sydney (like every other city in Australia) has sunny days almost year-round. In the summer months, the sun rays usually hit a high note. Without sunscreen, your skin is susceptible to extreme sunburn.
And for newcomers like you, the experience could even be worse. So, while coming here, ensure you take some sunscreen with you. On that, we'll advise you to get the creams with SPF 50 and above.
Also, pack a few aloe vera gel with you. You will need them to soothe the pain of sunburn if it eventually hits you. But in the case of extreme sunburn, check with a doctor.
3. Sunnies And Caps
Unfortunately, no sunscreen can offer you 100% protection from UV rays. In other words, you still need to do your part to reduce the likelihood of sunburn. How?
Get a pair of sunnies (sunglasses) and baseball caps. Why?
The chances are that you have never experienced anything like the sun of Sydney. Trust us, it burns. But beyond that, it can also affect your eyes (which you need the most as a student). So, get a pair of sunglasses.
For the baseball caps, you'll need them to protect your scalp, which is directly at the mercy of the hot sun. If you don't fancy "caps," you can get a sunhat.

4. A Universal Adapter
As a student, your phone and laptop will likely be your sidekicks. And we understand that you want them charged at all times. In that case, you need the adaptors compatible with the outlets here in Sydney.
Depending on your country, you might need chargers that support the Type I plug adapter. Otherwise, a universal type adapter is okay.
Note: get the chargers at your local store; they will be pricey at the airport.
5. Packing Cubes
Packing cubes are often overlooked, but they are instrumental in keeping your items organized. With these aids, you won't have to ruffle your neatly arranged clothes or files when searching for an item.
Also, packing cubes will help you ease into your student accommodation.
And that's it: you have all you need to ease your travels to Sydney. The city looks forward to having you!
